Spring, the most Wonderful time of the year.
I never really appreciated spring as a kid, or into my youth, or even as a young adult. It wasn’t until I had a chance to have my own small garden in my very first (very tiny) apartment that I realized just how wonderful it is. There was nothing more exciting then to see that first sprout of green from a daffodil or the buds on the tree that gave me that feeling of - everything is going to be ok (and the bouts of seasonal depression slowly start to fade away). The animals, insects, and birds all slowly awakening, the first smell of a Lilac…. there is absolutely nothing like the feeling it brings me this time of year or any other season.(not that I don’t like or appreciate all the others …but spring is just special to me.)
I now have become quite the gardener, bird watcher, and lover of all creatures great and small ( and yes, I love that show). Over the last five years especially, I have realized how much beauty is all around me (maybe this comes with age?). I think the pandemic really helped me slow down and pay attention to the environment and all beautiful creations with in it. So much so, I have become weepy over it; I have begin to morn the loss of all the creatures and plants that are being destroyed and the habitats they encounter.
I have changed my way of thinking, shopping, and even my sewing. I have realized as one person alone I can make a differnce. I can inspire others around me to make better choices. I can build a platform to tell my story and share my thoughts and ideas.
I encourage you to walk through your nearest park, and really take time to observe what’s in it. The trees and plants that are growing and what depends on them to be there. They to, like us, are living and need us all to start making better choices.
Do your research on the brands you buy; are they helping or hurting the environment? Use organic lawn care. Plant a few native plants in your garden this spring (if you have small space put them in pots). Consider setting out a bird bath or bird feeder in your back yard. (and this can be done on a small budget, trust me, I have mastered this).
I continue to put forward the very best I can day in and day out, and this sometimes this is all I can do. I am ok with that, because I tried my best and I helped where I can. I encourage you to do the same and start today.
Remember to stroll through a park (put your phone away) and fully breathe in and embrace Spring in all its glory, it really is the most wonderful time of year.
As I reflect on my journey from overlooking the beauty of spring to becoming a passionate advocate for nature, I am filled with gratitude for the lessons learned and the connections made. May we all find inspiration in the wonders of the natural world and strive to be stewards of the earth, protecting and preserving its splendor for generations to come.
