Alma Framed Silhouette

This vintage wooden framed silhouette would be perfect for a gallery wall!

Although the famed profile art has been around for a very long time, the term silhouette was derived from the parsimonious (such a fun word to say) mid-18th-century French finance minister Etienne de Silhouette who was know for collecting taxes from the rich and was not very well liked. His hobby was cutting paper shadow portraits in his spare time. The phrase “a la Silhouette” grew to mean “on the cheap”.

This is a found object in good condition. There are minor nicks in the frame, but I think it adds to the character. The black paint portion around the frame doesn’t seem to be original and looks painted on at a later time. The wood frame has no glass surrounding the image. There is a hook attached to the back for hanging.

The product measures 7 1/2 inches long by 5 1/2 wide and about 1 inch deep.
