Carmele Tote

$46.00

The Carmele tote is made from a vintage tea towel, adorned with the cutest chickens on both sides of the bag. Tea towels are made from linen or cotton and tend to be thinner than an actual dish towel which tends to be made with terrycloth. Tea towels date back to the 18th century England, when society women would embroider linen for use during tea time. The head of households in upper-class homes soon discovered linen wouldn’t scratch china or crystal, making it perfect for cleaning fine pieces. In later years, the tea towel became less of status symbol and more of a household item. Tea towels remained popular even in the great depression, when linen wasn’t readily available, so resourceful households started making towels out of cotton flour sacks.

This is a found material. The tea towel itself still had the vintage tag on, so most likely it was for decoration purposes. The lining is a green and white striped new toweling, and I have included 2 pockets made from other vintage cotton pieces. The canvas handle straps and metal gold zipper are new. All the fabric has been cleaned before the bag was made and the fabric is in perfect condition.

The tote is 12 3/4 inches long by about 14 1/2 inches wide, the straps hang at about 14 1/4 inches down. The smaller pocket can hold an iphone, about 3 inches wide by 6 inches long. The bigger pocket has about a 6 1/2 long opening and is about 4 1/2 inches deep.
